How Viruses Infect Your PC:

These malicious pieces of software are designed to replicate themselves, spread from pc to pc and can on some occasions return and re-infect your computer at a later date. Lets briefly take a look below at how they get into your computer as well as the different types which exist today.

1. When you execute a particular software program, document or email attachment it will cause the infection to load in which the virus code is executed.

2. The program or application will now be executed and will begin to take affect. There are commonly two behaviour patterns:

Direct Action: This particular type will immediately trigger itself to cause damage within your windows system by infecting various different files, programs and deleting other important system components.

Memory Resident: These types will load into system memory and will only be triggered by particular events which first have to take place. This basically means that they will only load when a particular software program or task is executed.

3. Now the effect of these malicious applications is dependant on what they are written to do. Having said this most of them set out to spread as much as they can, duplicate themselves and will search for new things that they can destroy.

Types Of Viruses

The first type we will talk about is called a Directory Virus. This type changes the path locations of various different files which trick people into running an infected program when the original software has actually been moved to another spot or location on your hard drive.

Next is File Viruses - These types attach themselves to software or are subsequently bundled into programs and documents which you download from the internet. Once you execute the program the infectious file will load into memory, take effect and damage your pc. This will also cause a great reduction in the speed and functionality of your operating system.

The virus that affects the boot sector of your hard drive is commonly known as the Boot Virus. A recommended precaution is to ensure that you do not have any unknown disks in your floppy disk drive as this can cause instant damage in which your operating system will fail to load.

One of the more destructive types which deletes all the information within the files it infects is called the Overwrite Virus. It ultimately leaves them completely useless in terms of functionality.

Another type of infection which encodes or encrypts itself upon each infection of a system via using algorithms is known as a Polymorphic Virus. Because of this it makes it almost impossible for you average spyware removal tools to detect them using standard signatures.

Another common type is the File Infector. These programs will infect executable files commonly ending with ".exe" and ".com". Once the particular application is executed the virus will load into memory and perform damage to a hard drive or related programs.

The Resident Virus usually resides within your RAM ( Random Access Memory ). Its main objective is to basically interrupt various different operations and can consequently corrupt programs and files which are executed.

Watch out for Worms. They usually spread via email and are designed to duplicate themselves. They have the ability to access your email address lists and automatically send themselves to as many users as they possibly can.

Software that redirects your internet browser to certain harmful web pages or search engines is called a Page Hijacker. These websites will commonly contain advertising or adware which infects your pc upon downloading the program or executing a dialogue box.

A virus which has the primary objective of duplication and taking action when executed is known as the Direct Action type. Basically when a certain condition has been met this file will load and infect all files within a particular folder and in directories.

The next one to discuss is the Macro Virus. These infections basically utilize different commands which are coded within software applications which will infect other files that are executed or viewed by that particular program.
